10 Common Causes for Fatigue
1. Lack of sleep: There are times when our sleep is simply set on the back burner for more immediate tasks. Projects, major life events and other distractions can cause us all to temporarily lose sleep.
2. Jet lag: Anyone that has traveled knows that jet lag can be exhausting. Jet lag involves a total shift in sleep. The longer the travel time, time change adjustment, and length of trip, the more fatigue will be experienced.
3. Sleeping trouble, such as insomnia: Excessive tiredness can be a byproduct of sleeping disorders such as insomnia.
4. Stress: If you have ever experienced stress, you know that it is mentally and physically draining. Stress causes one to feel tried and lethargic in waking hours even if he or she is sleeping at night.
5. Heavy workload: Work is a reality of most of our lives. Some jobs require more work than others. Even jobs that can be fairly uneventful have times where more work is needed. These times can cause one to feel more tired than usual.
6. Depression/Anxiety: Tiredness can be a result of one’s mental health. Depression and anxiety can cause one to miss sleep at night or too feel overly tired with or without consistent sleep.
7. Anemia: Anemia is a decrease in red blood cells. Red blood cells are what help circulate oxygen through the body. Tiredness is a major symptom of anemia.
8. Recovering from illness: It is common for people to feel tired when recovering from an injury or illness because their bodies are utilizing large amounts of energy to heal. The result is a drowsy, tired feeling though it means someone is actually healing.
9. Hypothyroidism: Hypothyroidism is a disease where the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones. Tiredness is one of several symptoms to this treatable, yet potentially serious, disease.
10. Alcohol/drug withdrawal: When someone is detoxing from large amounts of alcohol or drugs, it is common to experience fatigue.

More on Napping
- Do You Take Naps?: The Pros and Cons of Taking a Nap
What do you think of when you hear the term “napping”? Most people immediately think of children. But what about adults that nap? Though there are many misconceptions about adults that nap, it can be a healthy habit.
Seeking Solutions
1. Create a sleep routine: Developing a sleep routine can help decrease and even eliminate excessive tiredness. To create a sleep routine:
· Choose a desired “bedtime”
· Move towards going to sleep at that time one hour a week until you are in bed at the time you desire
· Wake up at the same time each day as you move towards your desired “bedtime”
· To help you fall asleep, make your room quiet and dark
· Stay in bed even if you have trouble falling asleep
2. Take naps: Take a 10-20 minute nap when needed.
3. Exercise: Exercise increases energy levels by causing oxygen to circulate through the body. Even 30 minutes of walking briskly can help boost your energy. Exercise is also credited with helping the body settle into a deeper, more restful sleep at night.
4. Eat green leafy vegetables: Green leafy vegetables are among the most nutrient rich foods. They contain multiple vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They will not only give you an energy boost, but may also increase positive mood.
5. Vitamin B12: B12 is a vitamin that can be found in several different foods including shellfish. This vitamin is known for giving energy. In fact, B12 deficiency is another common cause of tiredness. Consult a doctor before taking B12 supplements to ensure it is best for your case of tiredness.
6. Vitamin C: Though there are some questions about whether vitamin C actually increases energy, many doctors and herbalist recommend taking vitamin C supplements. Fruits, such as oranges, provide a natural, delicious source for this immune boosting vitamin.
7. Folic Acid: Folic-acid, also known as B-9, increase energy on the cellular level. You can naturally acquire more folic acid by eating foods such as leafy green vegetables, dry beans, liver and eggs. Synthetic B-9 can be found in cereals, breads, rice, four and pasta.
8. Drink plenty of water: Though water has no nutritional value, hydration does affect body functions. From digestion to the carrying of electrolytes, water keeps your body running smoothly.
9. Meditate: Meditation is a wonderful way of quieting the mind. Quieting the mind can help with several symptoms of fatigue including concentration and stress.
10. Do something fun!: Doing something fun for yourself can be a great stress reliever. It can also help break up the monotony of every day routines.

Thanks for a great article. These are some very helpful tips I can start using today.
Very informative hub!
This is an awesome resource you've made here @ KrystalD, I think your on your way up the Hubpages ladder of success with awesome content such as this. I have recently discovered about the effects of bodily PH levels both acidic & alkaline levels in the blood, and what it does to us all.
The foods we eat & drink daily definitely contribute to the overall wellness of our immune system, and thus our sleep patterns, or as you stated above tiredness during the day. So in turn I decided to change my diet towards the leafy greens direction, since what I found as you also said, is they have antioxidants, which reverse the process of oxidation in our cells after metabolism has occurred during digestion.
I use to have a serious case of gastritus, which made me tired and sleepy at moments when I felt I should have been energetic, but this is all changing now, with my move towards better health. Stress reduction is definitely another key element as you also stated here, and I meditate as well often.
Thanks for sharing such a powerful guide and useful hub. Voted up in very way.
Great hub, all your tips are very helpful. I've tried exercising when I cant sleep and that really works! Thanks for sharing.
Great informative article. I walk on the treadmill, but i can not do it too close to retiring, It gives me too much energy.. Thank you for sharing..
Very informative hub you've got here KrystalD. I also find myself in this situation from time to time, So I'll try the solution you suggested...
Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for this hub of yours that covered with full of information...well done KrystalD, cheers!
So important hub for our modern fast paced lives...we are all rushing constantly..but where and to whom and to achieve...to have what?....Do you really know?
wow...this is an awesome hub, and you have stated it all...from symptoms, to causes down to solutions...i do experience this before and i would admit that i experienced depression at that time...
very useful and interesting hub.. I am all the above. except alcohol and drug use. this past month I have been at the hospital every day almost all day. My husband has been in the hospital he is finally out. but now I have to take care of him at home. it is exhausting. I know I need to work out..but I can hardly get out of bed and I cant leave him by himself.
thanks for a great hub

Nice hub full of information about how a person experienced fatigue and possible solution on how to prevent it. Pushing yourself too much for excessive working habit with the aim of earning more money is a bad habit as you don't know you it snatches your life little by little.
Sorry for your loss @ KrystalD, my mom also passed away many years back due to breast cancer, and so I'm searching today for all the answers I can muster, & to help myself as well as others avoid the disease entirely by creating more awareness.
I found the info on PH balance to be the closest accurate data on the subject of disease, both low level illnesses & high, all seem to stem from this connection to Blood PH levels, and now I can see how my mom contracted the cancer, it was definitely a connection to her eating of processed foods, oils, high fructose corn syrup, fast foods, and the drinking of liquor every once & a while (casually & during holidays).
Your hub was a must to do & I'm glad you wrote it. Thanks for being so kind to address my response to your hub here, it deserved another look as well. Hope your detox leads you safely to the health range your looking to reach just don't forget balance is key, this is what I'm learning today me & my wife.
Great hub and excellent advice. There are so many demands on our time that we often think that we get the rest we need during sleep. This could not be further from the truth.
I think we should exchange links as this ties in well with some hubs I have on sleep problems.
Great work voted up useful and interesting.
Very informative and you give some good advice. For sleeping, it is also good to stop doing any 'mental' activities (even searching the web and checking emails) a few hours before you want to sleep.
Thanks for SHARING.
nice one
Very good, I must add, when my symptoms started I ended up - thankfully caught early - being diagnosed with sarcoidosis.
Phew the sleep, I do what most Sarcoids don't do, I don't take 'cat naps' many sufferers sleep an awful lot during the day, even healthy folks will get restless nights if they day snooze too often, I try let the tiredness build up and aim on a decent nights sleep, Sarcoid can make us constantly tired, its how best to manage it.
Excellent hub. The solutions you suggest are great, and I firmly believe in changing your diet if you are dosing up on caffeine to get you through the day and consume a diet of processed foods.
Voted up!
Great advice, thanks
Great informative hub. Thanks
Great hub, I'm sure a lot of us can identify with feeling groggy in the morning or in the afternoon right after lunch. I really like your suggestion of exercising. Even though some people think that will make you more tired, I think doing it consistently will actually give you more energy!
Excellent hub!
Nice Hub,Tiredness also comes when we work late at night and don't get sleep ..sleeping in afternoon also leads to tiredness ,Drink water as much as possible take vitamin C rich fruits like lemon, oranges which make you healthy and calm
Great info, thanks. I'd never known vitamin C as an energy giver, but it heals, and anything that is healing makes us feel better.
Excellent Hub, and yes all those are reasons to feel tired, for sure! I wrote a hub about another reason someone might feel tired - Vitamin D deficiency. More and more people are dealing with this issue. Congrats on being one of the hottest hubs of the day and welcome to hubpages!
Very interesting hub! I am ALWAYS tired, no matter what time of day or how much sleep I got the previous night. I've been looking into it more lately. This was helpful, thanks!
Glad you mentioned hypothyroidism. Problems with the thyroid really cause tiredness and many of the symptoms you described, so yes, it's important to visit a doctor. Lots of us have it.
Combating tiredness by understanding what causes it can really help, so many thanks for helpful Hub.
Look forward to reading more of your work over the next few months.
This is very well written and useful. The layout also makes it really easy to follow with all the information you provide. I've been having problems feeling tired all the time despite getting enough hours of sleep so I will definitely give some of your remedies a try. I don't like being dependent on caffeine and I'm sure I can easily replace my morning coffee with a glass or two of water and feel much better.
Add a little b-12 to your diet, it will do wonders for your energy level, also iron is good for energy. Wonderful hub by the way.
I'm glad you wrote this hub. I was nodding off just before I found it. Heading out to get some Kale now. Thanks! Voted up!
Well written and important to realise that not all tiredness is down to modern stress.
Excellent and well put together hub covering all the bases of your subject matter. Great job. Thumbs up.
Maybe you have a thyroid problem, seems like all the symptoms are there. I'd go and get a blood test if you are feeling like that.
Very detail hub and also a modern problem of our societies.
Thanks for explaining almost everything.I liked this hub nd your ideas.voted up!
Great hub and informative too. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent hub and very informative. Voted up.
Awesome hub. Great info! I'm always tired but I know why... I'm a store manager and I work sometimes weeks without taking a day off.. the joys of salary! Usually at least 14 hours a day and many times 15 or 16 hour days! So my tiresome body is from that! Thanks for the read!
Very informative and covers all the aspects necessary! Thanks a lot for sharing such wonderful information that can really help any person who needs to be alert all the time! Thanks a lot. Voted up!
Had to read this one just to find out why. You've covered a lot of the reasons for this pervasive tiredness that so many suffer. Recovering from major surgery has been the reason for my husband's ongoing fatigue, along with low iron and anemia. We are fighting this battle on many fronts and keep looking for ways to win. Thanks for your good tips to regain energy.
This is a great hub, really enjoyed reading it and will definitely be voting it up. Diet plays a huge role in how we feel on a daily basis and I see you have covered that well. I write a lot about nutrition and often when I am feeling tired I realise I haven't taken my own advice! Will be reading more of your hubs :)
Very nicely written hub. There are other causes of excessive tiredness or fatigue - one is chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS or ME - myalgic encephalopathy). Of course, you hit the most common causes and that is what your very well written hub is about. Nice job - keep up the good work!
Very good hub. informative. Voted up. Interested to read more.
I almost got a good advice from a doctor with this hub! Thinks I have to eat above mentioned foods for a better day.
Good hub. Thorough discussion about causes and solutions for being tired all the time.
I heard adrenal fatique can be the cause of tiredness. This happens when a person is under constant stress. It can also lead to obesity. The cure is to reduce stress through various means, reframing stressful thought patterns is one of them.
Great hub, useful information. Thanks for your hard work to put all these together.
"Adrenal fatigue" is a popular diagnosis these days and it makes sense physiologically - however, last I heard it is not a true medical diagnosis.
Great hub - plenty of information. I have found taking a "catnap" of just 10 minutes in the afternoon keeps me fresh the rest of the day.
Great hub about tiredness. I always feel tired during the day because I can't sleep at night. Had to wait until 2-3am in the morning to fall into my bed. I think i have insomnia. Thanks for the tips. will try to stay in bed even when i can't sleep.
I feel tired most of the time and getting sleep also doesn't solve the purpose.Tried drinking 2 glasses of water early in the morning but that also was not of much help.I sleep late and that is the main problem ,have tried to sleep early but stay awake till 12.I was a very active person but suffered jaundice then had to undergo laproscopy for gall stones.Ever since my activities have reduced I get tired immediately. Good Hub.Very well written.
This is a great article, I often feel more tired than I should. I do need to create a sleeping pattern/schedule for my son and I.
Great article indeed
Nice job! Lots of useful information. I can definitely relate to drinking too much coffee and feeling worn out all the time. However, I noticed a significant and positive change once I restricted my intake of caffeine to 2-3 times per week and increased my consumption of water and herbal tea. I also increased cardio training and stretching, which helped combat stress and made it easy to sleep 7-8 hours per night.
I really needed this pep talk to get back on a good sleep schedule. NPR just reported that when switching bedtimes around our bodies can react as though we are suffering from jet lag. Also, with so much media stimulation around it is hard to shut off the various devices and get our needed rest. Great hub! ~voted up~
I'm am so glad to see someone took the time to adress this issue. You're right a short 20 minutes of sleep will revive your body.I think you did a wonderful job writing this.I found it very useful and helpful. You're right about everything I didn't mean to sound like the rest of your advice wasn't important, after I reread my comment.I thought it kind of sounded that way. Thanks
Great hub. I need to add leafy veggies to my diet because I do feel lethargic at times.
this was a great hub. I don't think people realize how important sleep is for your over all physical and mental health. I was surprised you didn't mention sleep apnea as a reason for tiredness during the day. I have just resolved this issue with a C-pap machine, which is a pain, but worth it because I get up in the morning refreshed. Your hub was very, very informative and much needed for our high stress world. Blessings
Great article ! i take 6 hours sleep during night and 30 minutes of naps twice and work 12 hours on computers daily on an average, 30 minutes of walk. Never feel tired though stresses are due to some other reasons. Do you feel that It is normal for me, approaching age of 45 yrs ?
Thanks for this hub. I have been worried about the extreme fatigue I'm experiencing lately—I could sleep for 12 hours and still be too exhausted to get out of bed in the morning. I'm going to try some of your tips, including eating more leafy greens and boning up on my B12. I used to survive on kale and spinach, as well as take a B12 supplement, but I moved a month or so ago and have not gotten back into my usual habits fully. Thanks for the advice!
I always feel this way, It seems what I eat effects me more in the afternoon. I try to stay on protein in the afternoons and my heavier stuff in them morning so I can burn it off! Nice article very well put together! Thanks. :)
Very interesting hub. The tip about staying hydrated is a great one. Whenever I am feeling excessively tired and there isn't a reason such as staying up late I will always try to drink a couple of big glasses of water. It may sound crazy, but 99 percent of the time it perks me up more than coffee.
Great i was looking for a such hub. i am going to use your recommendation, plus i need to stay away from my laptop once awhile.
Really a good learning. I am suffering with this problem. So it is not an information, but a solution. I holpe it will help many people.
I have never been a morning person. Ever since I was a toddler my parents would say I hated mornings... I've seen photos of me as a young child with the same "don't bother me. I hate waking up" look as I have now when I have to wake up. A few years back I was was even more tired than usual, and would last all day instead of the 10 minutes after waking up. I would fall asleep in school, come home and nap, sleep all night, sleep at school etc.. I found out i was anemic and b12 deficient. I took iron pills and would (sorry.. TMI) get constipated, and b12 pills make me feel nauseous. Any tips of other things I could take without having to eat copious amounts of anything?
Very well written
excessive tiredness is due to depression. it can be physical or mental. our imagination is always superior to reality. do not live in imagination. it will cause great disappointment.
great hub. Thanks
Very good hub. Chronic fatigue, or lack of energy, apparently is very hard for the medical community to get a handle on. In many cases the thyroid is the culprit, and sometimes it takes years of testing if the problem is a TSH problem. Hashimotos disease runs in my family, and not only was I diagnosed with it, but there were tumors, too. My doctor was surprised because tests had failed to find either problem for years. When I recovered my strength too slowly, it turned out that I had another medication fighting my levothyroxin. I switched it to evening and am now slowly regaining stength. Also, anyone on thyroid medication should be aware that citrus fruits should not be consumed within 8 to 12 hours of taking the medication. My mother knew not to drink grapefruit juice for breakfast, but she had a glass of orange juice every morning and then wondered why she still had problems.
I think that a lot of times depression is misdiagnosed as the cause. The depression is actually being blamed when it is a result of the underlying cause.
rahul0324 It could be thyroid, lungs, or a heart problem. Keep after the doctors until they find it. I feel for you, been there done that.
Great Information, Thanks For Sharing
I am going to add a link to this hub to my "Everyday Toxins & Topic Habits: Top 5 Ways to Weaken Your Immune System" hub and my "Immune Boosting - Why Start" hub.
This is an informative hub! Voted up, interesting & useful. :) Best regards~
Great hub, I have been faced with tiredness everyday even now because of my sinus, any way can help with that?
I used to be one of those always-tired people years ago. Here's another cause of fatigue I discovered: Sugar! Even though I didn't think I had a problem with sugar - and didn't think I consumed that much of it, I eventually had to face the reality that I did. It's in everything. (Bodywork / massage can also be very helpful for relaxing, reducing stress and inducing sleep.)
insecurity, or very much negative oriented imagination, or many failures experienced in the past ,besides health disorders.

Very useful hub over here. I would like to share a problem of my own. I sleep too much like, I cannot get out of bed before 11-12 hours of sleep. Moreover I sleep very late. Any solution to that??
