What’s in a name? Definitions

Tired: exhausted, as by exertion; fatigued or sleepy.

Fatigue: weariness from bodily or mental exertion.

http://dictionary.reference.com/(Retrieved 1/29/12)

Are you:

· Feeling like you want to crawl back into bed by lunchtime?

· Tired throughout the day even when you sleep 6-8 hours regularly?

· Concerned about how excessively tired you feel?

In a world of constant activity and pressure, many people report feeling excessively tired. If you are plagued with a consistent feeling of fatigue, knowing symptoms, causes, solutions and when to seek help is of the upmost importance.

******************************************************************************************

10 Symptoms of Excessive Tiredness

1. Trouble getting up in the morning: Do you find yourself pressing snooze 3 or more times daily?

2. Too tired for daily tasks such as working, driving or shopping: Are you finding that you are barely making it through your day because of drowsiness?

3. Depending on caffeine: Are you drinking more than 2 cups of coffee, tea, or cola to cope your tiredness?

4. General feeling of being “run-down”: Are you dragging? Do you constantly think, “I need a vacation?”

5. Irritability: Is your tiredness causing you to feel overly sensitive? Easily frazzled?

6. Change in appetite: Do you find yourself eating less? More?

7. Muscular weakness: Are you feeling physically weak?

8. Difficulty concentrating: Having trouble staying on task?

9. Cold-like symptoms: Is your tiredness accompanied by sneezing, coughing or runny nose?

10. Short-term memory loss: Are you forgetting more?

*******************************************************************************************

10 Common Causes for Fatigue

1. Lack of sleep: There are times when our sleep is simply set on the back burner for more immediate tasks. Projects, major life events and other distractions can cause us all to temporarily lose sleep.

2. Jet lag: Anyone that has traveled knows that jet lag can be exhausting. Jet lag involves a total shift in sleep. The longer the travel time, time change adjustment, and length of trip, the more fatigue will be experienced.

3. Sleeping trouble, such as insomnia: Excessive tiredness can be a byproduct of sleeping disorders such as insomnia.

4. Stress: If you have ever experienced stress, you know that it is mentally and physically draining. Stress causes one to feel tried and lethargic in waking hours even if he or she is sleeping at night.

5. Heavy workload: Work is a reality of most of our lives. Some jobs require more work than others. Even jobs that can be fairly uneventful have times where more work is needed. These times can cause one to feel more tired than usual.

6. Depression/Anxiety: Tiredness can be a result of one’s mental health. Depression and anxiety can cause one to miss sleep at night or too feel overly tired with or without consistent sleep.

7. Anemia: Anemia is a decrease in red blood cells. Red blood cells are what help circulate oxygen through the body. Tiredness is a major symptom of anemia.

8. Recovering from illness: It is common for people to feel tired when recovering from an injury or illness because their bodies are utilizing large amounts of energy to heal. The result is a drowsy, tired feeling though it means someone is actually healing.

9. Hypothyroidism: Hypothyroidism is a disease where the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones. Tiredness is one of several symptoms to this treatable, yet potentially serious, disease.

10. Alcohol/drug withdrawal: When someone is detoxing from large amounts of alcohol or drugs, it is common to experience fatigue.

********************************************************************************************

Seeking Solutions

1. Create a sleep routine: Developing a sleep routine can help decrease and even eliminate excessive tiredness. To create a sleep routine:

· Choose a desired “bedtime”

· Move towards going to sleep at that time one hour a week until you are in bed at the time you desire

· Wake up at the same time each day as you move towards your desired “bedtime”

· To help you fall asleep, make your room quiet and dark

· Stay in bed even if you have trouble falling asleep

2. Take naps: Take a 10-20 minute nap when needed.

Even brisk walking can increase energy.

3. Exercise: Exercise increases energy levels by causing oxygen to circulate through the body. Even 30 minutes of walking briskly can help boost your energy. Exercise is also credited with helping the body settle into a deeper, more restful sleep at night.

4. Eat green leafy vegetables: Green leafy vegetables are among the most nutrient rich foods. They contain multiple vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They will not only give you an energy boost, but may also increase positive mood.

5. Vitamin B12: B12 is a vitamin that can be found in several different foods including shellfish. This vitamin is known for giving energy. In fact, B12 deficiency is another common cause of tiredness. Consult a doctor before taking B12 supplements to ensure it is best for your case of tiredness.

6. Vitamin C: Though there are some questions about whether vitamin C actually increases energy, many doctors and herbalist recommend taking vitamin C supplements. Fruits, such as oranges, provide a natural, delicious source for this immune boosting vitamin.

7. Folic Acid: Folic-acid, also known as B-9, increase energy on the cellular level. You can naturally acquire more folic acid by eating foods such as leafy green vegetables, dry beans, liver and eggs. Synthetic B-9 can be found in cereals, breads, rice, four and pasta.

8. Drink plenty of water: Though water has no nutritional value, hydration does affect body functions. From digestion to the carrying of electrolytes, water keeps your body running smoothly.

9. Meditate: Meditation is a wonderful way of quieting the mind. Quieting the mind can help with several symptoms of fatigue including concentration and stress.

10. Do something fun!: Doing something fun for yourself can be a great stress reliever. It can also help break up the monotony of every day routines.

This is an awesome resource you've made here @ KrystalD, I think your on your way up the Hubpages ladder of success with awesome content such as this. I have recently discovered about the effects of bodily PH levels both acidic & alkaline levels in the blood, and what it does to us all.

The foods we eat & drink daily definitely contribute to the overall wellness of our immune system, and thus our sleep patterns, or as you stated above tiredness during the day. So in turn I decided to change my diet towards the leafy greens direction, since what I found as you also said, is they have antioxidants, which reverse the process of oxidation in our cells after metabolism has occurred during digestion.

I use to have a serious case of gastritus, which made me tired and sleepy at moments when I felt I should have been energetic, but this is all changing now, with my move towards better health. Stress reduction is definitely another key element as you also stated here, and I meditate as well often.

Thanks for sharing such a powerful guide and useful hub. Voted up in very way.

Thanks for stopping by and reading all! I really could not sleep last night and boy did I pay for it today in exhaustion!

rahul0324, that is a lot of sleep! I would see a doctor. It might also be that your making yourself tired by sleeping for so long. An alarm clock can help you keep your sleep at 8 hours nightly.

sabrani and always exploring, I sleep much better when I exercise regularly too but I find it a challenge to go after my long days at work. I go through ebs and flows of regular exercise.

cloud explorer, I have been enjoying my time with HP. I find my interest growing. I am fascinated at what catches my attention. Health is a topic I never really thought I would be writing about but it is a topic that is important to my life. I think it is relatable for us all! Thanks for sharing your experience with digestion, stress and sleep. I know that it can be a real balancing act and I seem to go in and out of awareness of these issues. I am geting ready to do a month long detoxification with juices and plenty of organic raw fruits and vegetables. I am sure that hourney will make for some interesting writing! I am hoping it might help me become more consistent with my healthy lifestyle. My father passed from diabetes and I know what I do to my body now effects the rest of my life.

Nice hub full of information about how a person experienced fatigue and possible solution on how to prevent it. Pushing yourself too much for excessive working habit with the aim of earning more money is a bad habit as you don't know you it snatches your life little by little.

raciniwa-I have also experienced boughts of depression and I found it made me really want to stay in bed. Gettibg up and active was a key way for me to get through the feelings.

Deborah-I am so sorry to hear of the health issues of your husband. I know that must be difficult in terms of feeling rested and refreshed. Taking care of someone that is so close can be a draining, full time job. I hope you can get some rest as things get easier. I hope even one small part of this hub was helpful for you.

Mary-deo-I agree with you absolutely. Working too hard is a major reason for people's exhaustion. In the end, we all have to wiegh out the pros and cons of working so hard. I certainly work a job that demands a lot (teaching) but I truly love it and would not want to do anything else full-time (accept maybe write).

Sorry for your loss @ KrystalD, my mom also passed away many years back due to breast cancer, and so I'm searching today for all the answers I can muster, & to help myself as well as others avoid the disease entirely by creating more awareness.

I found the info on PH balance to be the closest accurate data on the subject of disease, both low level illnesses & high, all seem to stem from this connection to Blood PH levels, and now I can see how my mom contracted the cancer, it was definitely a connection to her eating of processed foods, oils, high fructose corn syrup, fast foods, and the drinking of liquor every once & a while (casually & during holidays).

Your hub was a must to do & I'm glad you wrote it. Thanks for being so kind to address my response to your hub here, it deserved another look as well. Hope your detox leads you safely to the health range your looking to reach just don't forget balance is key, this is what I'm learning today me & my wife.

Phew the sleep, I do what most Sarcoids don't do, I don't take 'cat naps' many sufferers sleep an awful lot during the day, even healthy folks will get restless nights if they day snooze too often, I try let the tiredness build up and aim on a decent nights sleep, Sarcoid can make us constantly tired, its how best to manage it.

I would fall asleep in school, come home and nap, sleep all night, sleep at school etc.. I found out i was anemic and b12 deficient. I took iron pills and would (sorry.. excessive tiredness is due to depression. it can be physical or mental. our imagination is always superior to reality. do not live in imagination. it will cause great disappointment.

Very good hub. Chronic fatigue, or lack of energy, apparently is very hard for the medical community to get a handle on. In many cases the thyroid is the culprit, and sometimes it takes years of testing if the problem is a TSH problem. Hashimotos disease runs in my family, and not only was I diagnosed with it, but there were tumors, too. My doctor was surprised because tests had failed to find either problem for years. When I recovered my strength too slowly, it turned out that I had another medication fighting my levothyroxin. I switched it to evening and am now slowly regaining stength. Also, anyone on thyroid medication should be aware that citrus fruits should not be consumed within 8 to 12 hours of taking the medication. My mother knew not to drink grapefruit juice for breakfast, but she had a glass of orange juice every morning and then wondered why she still had problems.

I think that a lot of times depression is misdiagnosed as the cause. The depression is actually being blamed when it is a result of the underlying cause.

rahul0324 It could be thyroid, lungs, or a heart problem. Keep after the doctors until they find it. I feel for you, been there done that.

Thanks for reading and commenting all :)

Amy, I totally understand not being a morning person and I am glad to hear you took the time and care to find what was medically behind it. Exercise and meditation are two things you could try adding to your life to help without eat more :)

cablemanagements, two naps a day sounds like a luxury! Seems to me you are getting enough rest for someone at any age! Keep up the great work :)

MizBejabbers,

Finding the true diagnose can take time and I agree about the misdiagnosis of depression. Tiredness can and is often a physical problem. Sounds like you and your mother have been lucky ladies to find out what was going on. Thanks for sharing :)

I used to be one of those always-tired people years ago. Here's another cause of fatigue I discovered: Sugar! Even though I didn't think I had a problem with sugar - and didn't think I consumed that much of it, I eventually had to face the reality that I did. It's in everything. (Bodywork / massage can also be very helpful for relaxing, reducing stress and inducing sleep.)

This is so true for me TennisElbowTutor! When I leave sugar and flower alone my body is much more energized!
